Wanting Jesus for Objects?

How many of us have asked Jesus for materialistic things? That should be all of us right? “Lord I want a car, a new house, a new job. I want this Jesus and that Jesus.” Do you see yourself coming to Jesus for only things that you want? If you said yes, that is not good. There’s a scripture that I came across in John 6 referring to people looking for Jesus after He had fed them with five loaves of bread and two fish. They found Jesus in Capernaum asking Him “Rabbi, when did you get here?”(John 6:25). His response was beautiful to me, and I knew I had to share it with you all. Jesus replied in John 6:26 “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.” This was a great response because this is how I feel about people when they see me get to a good spot in my life. They just want me because of this and that. This is how Jesus feels about people just wanting Him for things. He wants people to love Him because He’s God. He wants people to follow Him so that they can share His goodness with the world. The Lord wants people to know about His Good works and His unconditional love.

Do you recognize that as believers, we are like that about blessings? We pray for Jesus to bless us financially and when we are blessed financially, we get into the habit of asking for things like a better job, a boyfriend/girlfriend, and all kind of things in this world. We start to think Jesus is like an on-demand genie. He’s not like that. God gives us blessings because He loves us. He wants to see His children happy, but He also wants to look at His children battle and have faith in Him. He wants us to depend on Him through the good and the bad. If Jesus only blessed us with everything we wanted, we wouldn’t want Him for nothing else. Jesus was basically saying in John 6:26, you just want me to bless you. You don’t want to learn the understanding of my Word, or truly live for me. Wow! If that’s not a Word! Jesus wants you to live out loud for Him, not just because He can bless you.

Jesus can do anything, but we have to suffer for Him, just like He suffered for our salvation. There are times where we are going through loneliness, feeling misunderstood, or maybe a season of betrayal. Jesus went through all of these things, and He wants you to know how He felt while He was on Earth. That’s why a part of the Fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering. We have to endure through suffering for a long time. This is not God punishing us, but to help us mature as a disciple of Jesus. If you can sustain for a long time, you can handle anything that comes your way. You are made in God’s image, so that is something that you are built to deal with.

You may not have the car that you want. You may not have the job that you want. You may not have a lot of things you want, but God is going to bless you. He doesn’t bless you with things right away because you may not be ready for it yet. He has to prepare you for the blessing that is coming!

In our lives, some people just want us for things. They just want to use us so they can get what they want. They feel like we’re about to come up in finances, come up in our connections, and come up in a better life than it is now. Some people may not like us. They just want what we have. Jesus feels like that too when we come into His life, saying “give me this or that Lord. I need it.” Some people don’t care about Jesus, but they’ve been getting the wrong perspective of Him. Sometimes, we are only talking about what Jesus can bless us with and not talking about the challenges in our life. We have to show people who Jesus is through the good and the bad. Through the bad times, we show others that The Lord will bring us out of the tough times.

People shouldn’t just want Jesus because of His blessings. They should desire more of God’s goodness! He shows us, love when nobody else will. He gives us joy that the world can’t take away. He gives us grace when we are undeserving. All those times that we have turned our backs on Him and He should have cut us off. We should have all been dead right now! Jesus freed us from sins when we were on our way to Hell. Because of Him dying on that cross, we have a fantastic choice to make Heaven our home or continue to live in sin and make Hell our home.

Jesus said in John 6:27 “But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

This verse is saying you shouldn’t be so concerned with things that God can bless you with, but seek out what He has called you to do. Live the way the Lord wants you to. Everyone has a purpose in life. Your purpose may be to speak the Word of God on social media, blog about your faith, or make YouTube videos about the goodness of God. Another objective is as simple as being a mentor to the youth or being a mother to your kids. The Lord wants you to seek Him so that you can learn about what you can do for Him today! Go on a fast, pray, read God’s Word, so you can know your calling!

Stop asking Jesus all the time about what you can get from Him. Ask Jesus what you can do for Him. Ask people how you can pray for them. Concentrate on serving Jesus and others. Put yourself last. I’m not saying you shouldn’t ever think about yourself. I’m telling you, you should put Jesus and others before you. Jesus should always come first in your life. Sometimes you have those days where you have to get yourself together. Some of you care too much about people that you are lacking sleep and good health. The Lord still wants you to rest and take care of yourself, but we’ll talk about how rest is essential in another post. Start asking Jesus how you can work on yourself instead of asking for blessings. Before you ask for something from God, ask yourself, will this glorify Him or yourself? If it glorifies you, then you don’t need it. Our life is not about us, it’s about Jesus!

Getting a blessing from God is lovely, but what if you don’t get that blessing right away as you have in the past? Will you still want Him? Will you always love Him? I believe Jesus said “you just want me because I fed you” because we get so caught up in the earthly things and not the heavenly things. What do you need to be doing for the Kingdom? What has God called you to do? You need to be doing it today! Stop just trying to get things, and you are not doing anything for the Lord.

I’ve been asking The Lord for financial income to come from this blog. I took time away because I lost purpose on why I was blogging. I was asking The Lord “can I get financial income from this blog? I want to help people I don’t know, family and myself.” I stopped blogging for a while because I wasn’t getting an answer from Him. Recently, I asked again, and The Lord asked me, “How do you want me to bless you with financial income from your blog and you’re not working on it consistently?” “He said “You have to be consistent.” Sometimes we miss out on our blessings because we are not consistent. The Lord is not going to feed you a blessing, and you can’t digest it because you didn’t work on what He called you to do.

It’s time to step away from wanting a blessing all the time. It’s time to do God’s work even if you don’t get what you asked for right away. Do it because He told you to do it. Live for Jesus in a way that people want to get to know Jesus as well. Unsaved people will want to live for Jesus through the good and the bad. Guess why? Because they watched you live through the good and the bad. We need to show the unsaved people God’s blessings in our lives, but also His love and how amazing He has been in our lives even when it looks challenging.

I love you all! I hope that this post blessed you! Have a great day, evening, and night! What do you need to work on in your life? Ask God about that today.

Prayer: Lord, we ask that you steer us away from the earthly things, but help us to look at the Heavenly things. Help us to stop praying for just ourselves. Help us to spread the love in our prayer life. Help us to intercede for others in our family, friendships, people we don’t know, and the nation. Lord help us to figure out our calling and let us know what we are here to do for YOU. Remind us that this is not about us, it’s about YOU! Thank you for the things that you have blessed us with already. Help us to receive every blessing that you give us. Help us to see that you are not a genie in a bottle, but YOU are a GREAT GOD of GREAT WORKS! We love you, and we thank you for showing us that we shouldn’t just want you for objects. In Jesus name, Amen!

John 6:28-29 NLT: [28] They replied “We want to perform God’s works too. What should we do?” [29] Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
