I’ve been reading a devotional called Love Like Jesus on Youversion Bible App and it’s been such an eye-opening devotion. Each day a person would talk about how they encountered love from someone that was like Jesus or a moment where they had to show love like Jesus. I’ve been thinking about how I am showing Jesus love in my life. Sometimes I feel like I do a good job, but lately I haven’t been loving to people in my surroundings like my roommates. A lot of times this roommate can irk my nerves, and I end up talking to God about how annoying she is. But, does God enjoy me talking about His lost child like that? I know He doesn’t, so as I read this devotional, this roommate was on my mind.
The hardest thing about loving people is loving those that are different from you. The ones that get on your nerves. Spreading love like Jesus really comes into action with these types of people. One of the devotional readings in Love Like Jesus, is a woman talking about how her dad would love her mom when she was diagnosed with arthritis and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She said her dad would continue to love her mom even when it was hard for her mom to move, such as cooking her breakfast or tying her shoes. I know it was hard to watch his wife struggle and she couldn’t do things on her own. Through all the pain he was feeling mentally, the woman said “my father spent his days loving, serving, and praying for her.” That right there is real LOVE!
How many times do we talk about people that aggravate us instead of loving on them? Many times right? I’m with you. I’m in that situation right now. I’ll let you on a secret, I think I’m so annoyed with this roommate because I’ve been praying for this roommate. The enemy wants me to be irritated with her to the point that I don’t like her. I thought about this recently.
We like to say we love people like Jesus, but honestly, we don’t. To love people like Jesus is to show unconditional love even when someone tells you off, love when someone tells you that your belief in God is wrong, love people when they are rude and dishonest and even when someone hurts your feelings. Jesus loves even when our thinking is warped. He loves us when we have doubts about His plan for our lives. He continues to love us when we turn our backs on Him. That’s genuine love! Are we loving enough to clothe someone or feed someone we don’t know? Can we love like Jesus and look past a person’s beliefs or their looks?
We can actually, but it takes the Holy Ghost to show unconditional love to people. We cannot love people with our own strength. We’ll entertain our flesh and become hateful towards someone who is dishonest or unforgiving. We’ll feel like someone doesn’t deserves our love because of how much they hurt us.
It takes a lot to love someone who doesn’t seem to deserve it, but Christ loves us and we don’t deserve it. We have to ask the Holy Spirit to help us love those that we don’t really care for. Only God can do that for us. I’ve been asking Him to help me love my roommate even when I’m aggravated by her. John 15:12 says “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”The way that Jesus loves us is how we should love others. No matter how bad someone messes up in our life, we owe it to God to love them. Maybe your mom or dad hasn’t been there for you. They never supported your dreams or God’s plan for your life. Maybe you were disowned by your family members because you chose Christ over your family’s religion. You still have to love them unconditionally. You can still love them unconditionally from a distance by praying for them. That’s an act of love towards them because you are big enough to ask God to help your family.
Luke 6:35 says “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.”This scripture is telling you to love people that don’t care for you. Love people and be kind to all types of people even your enemies. God will reward you for loving His people. God is kind to people who are ungrateful and to the evil people. If He wasn’t, all the evil people would be wiped off the face of the Earth. He wants to give evil people a chance to get their lives together. If Jesus can freely love people, then so can we. It’ll be difficult, but we can do it with the Holy Spirit. He is the One that lives inside of us and helps us to extend grace and mercy to others when they may not deserve it.
Matthew 25: 35-36 & 40 says “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. “I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ These verses states that when we love and tend to a stranger, we are tending to Jesus. We have to treat people like Jesus every day. Read my note to these verses from the Bible App: “Everyday we have to go into the world and treat people like Jesus. If we’re hurting someone’s feelings, we’re hurting Jesus feelings. When we lift someone up, we lift Jesus up. So, treat people how you would treat Jesus if He was in fleshly form. Show that rude coworker love as if he/she was Jesus. Look at every person as if they are Jesus, so you can extend mercy, grace and love like Jesus.”
I think a lot of people don’t want to come to Jesus because of how we treat them. Who wants to be a part of Jesus family when we are walking around looking down on others? Who wants to be a Christian when we just are rude and hypocritical? I wouldn’t. This is why we are called to love EVERYBODY, no matter their race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and so much more. People are already hurt enough, so let’s show love to the hurt people.
Love people like Jesus because you may be entertaining angels and you don’t realize it. (Heb.13:2) We can turn people away and that could’ve been a test to see if you are really loving like you say you are. As a body of Christ, we have to work on loving people like Jesus. The way that we treat people could hinder them from stepping closer to Christ. Even when we don’t like people secretly, God sees our heart towards that person and He is not pleased with it. Let’s do better collectively people.
This year God has been leading me to be transparent as possible in these blog post. This is a way where I’m not as loving as I think. That might be the same for you. Do a heart check lovely people. Ask God to reveal to you what you lack in your life. Thank you for reading and sharing! Have a great week!
Prayer: Lord, we are sorry for not loving people as You want us to. Help us to love people of all kinds, whether it’s our noisy coworker, our irritating roommate, our friend who lacks in support, and anybody who does not act like us. Allow the Holy Spirit to come into our heart and help us to extend mercy, grace and love to everyone. We have a desire to love people, but we don’t know how to love everyone. Teach us Father God! We need to love like You, so people can come to You! In Jesus name, we thank You, Amen!
Hebrew 13:1-2 NLT – Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!
